Kids Pantry/Backpack Program:

There are many kids in Denison who are at risk of hunger.  During the school year these kids depend
on the breakfast and lunch that they get at school for their main daily nourishment.  During weekends
and summer vacation they have to depend on another source of food.  The Kid's Backpack Program
was established for this reason.  Food is donated or purchased at local grocery stores and volunteers
stuff backpacks for these kids.  The backpacks are taken to the schools and the kids pick up and take
home for the weekend.  Backpacks are returned to the school on Monday and the cycle starts over.
During the summer, food distribution days are set up and families come to Trinity UMC to pick up the
food.  Without this supply of food, many kids will not have enough to eat.

Currently, the program is housed in the basement of Trinity UMC and provides food to 338 kids. During
the 2015 Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the program provided food to over 90 families with 247

The program has been extremely fortunate to receive close to 3,400 items in 2015 which were
purchased by Krogers food customers at the Denison and Sherman locations.   Boy Scout Troop # 611
picked up these items over a period of three weekends.  Cub Scout Pack #606 has also picked up food
during their Scouting for  Food Program.  The program has been blessed by their donation as well.

As part an effort to fill the shelves of the pantry, (which were bare), letters to 30 different churches
asking them for help in collecting soup during the month of February 2015.  Refuge Church presented
243 items to us on Monday, Feburary 9th.   The Refuge is located at the Morton Street Plaza Shopping
Center.  One of the ministries that they support is the "Gift of Grace Resale Barn" which is located on
the west side of the Plaza.   Money from this resale shop goes to support a halfway house for men.
They mentioned that they always have a need for mens and
childrens clothing.  If you have donations of clothing, please contact them.

Waples UMC also took up a communion rail offering for Kid's Pantry the first Sunday of February
2015.    As we work together for those who have a need we become a stronger and kinder community.
If you would like to volunteer to help with the Backpack Program or donate food, please contact the
church office at 903-465-4996.  Sherrie Jackson administers the program and she will love to talk to
you about the program and how you can help.
